The History of Chesterfield, Missouri
What residents and visitors alike now know as Chesterfield, Missouri was once actually several smaller communities including: Bellefontaine which dates back to 1837; Lake, or as it was originally known – “Log Hollow” – which dates back to about 1850; Gumbo, which sprang up around 1880; Monarch, a railroad town that has its beginnings back in the 1870s; and Bonhomme which also dates back to the late 1800s. For over a century, what is now known as Chesterfield, Missouri was a large, unincorporated, area of land that contained all of these smaller towns along with several others. Because of its location in western St. Louis County, the area was commonly referred to as “West County” by local residents. By the middle of the 20th century, residents began to become concerned about the lack of public services the residents received as a result of the fact that they remained an unincorporated area of land. In addition, because they had yet to incorporate the residents did not directly benefit from taxes they paid to the county. Following several failed attempts at incorporation, the town of Chesterfield was finally incorporated in 1988 and has thrived ever since.
